Lying Low in Virginia

Coley arrived in Virginia near Richmond on Saturday, but he has been delayed by bad weather there today.

Wrights Pond, VA where Coley’s biding his time

March 14 – Flew from Jacksonville, Florida to South Carolina about 50 miles north of Savannah and the Georgia border,  about 178 miles.

March 15 – Made it to central North Carolina after about 220 miles of good flying today.

March 16 – Another good day reaching about 12 miles east northeast of Richmond, Virginia, about 175 miles today.

March 17 – I believe that bad weather has held him up and from the looks of the weather report, it was a good thing that he has not attempted to head north today.  I am sure he took advantage of the headwaters of the York River, which happens to be my old Osprey research area from 43 years ago; the many small lakes in the area likely allowed him to catch a fish or two.

Coley has about 275 miles more to go to reach home.  With the bad weather in the Northeast, I suspect he will be delayed a day or two more so arrival in Jamaica Bay may not happen until Thursday.

  1. This is a wonderful projects and I have been following Coley’s journey on his enroute home. I’m a New Yorker and I plan on making a trip to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge when he returns to his nest. Coley is amazing! He’s a celebrity and we are members of his fan club!

  2. I find it so amazing that a bird fly’s so many miles at a time. I pray Coley has safe journeys home. Looking forward to continue watching and learning about Coley.

  3. Is everything okay with Coley? No updates on his progress in a few days is making me very nervous.
