Time to Bulk Up

When the young finally launch and gradually gain their independence, the adult Ospreys need only fish to feed themselves and gain extra fat for the long migration ahead. All summer we have watched our Osprey and he has confined his activity almost exclusively to Jamaica Bay, where the fishing must be pretty good. Over the last two weeks with diminishing parental duties, he has confined his activity even more, as the map shows. He has made a few flights to the shores of JFK airport and another to the south shore at Rockaway Beach, but beyond that he has remained in a very tight circle of about a mile from his nest.

By the end of August, he will be close to taking off on a migration to who knows where.

Bull’s eyes = Osprey’s location every hour.
Lines = Sequence of locations in time (not the actual flight path)
